For many students, picking a college major can feel like locking in a life path. But for Troy University alumna Katie Byrd, the decision was less about choosing one direction and more about finding a way to bring two of her favorite subjects together. Byrd, who graduated with degrees in both mathematics and psychology, has built a career that blends analytical thinking with a deep understanding of human behavior.
Instead of seeing math and psychology as separate worlds, Byrd saw them as tools that could work in tandem. She realized that numbers and data could help explain how people think, feel, and make decisions. That insight led her into a field where she could use quantitative skills to solve real-world problems, particularly in areas that affect people's daily lives.
Byrd's work now focuses on applying psychological principles through a mathematical lens, allowing her to create solutions that are both data-driven and human-centered. She credits her time at Troy for giving her the flexibility to explore both disciplines without feeling forced to choose. The university's interdisciplinary approach, she says, helped her see that a career does not have to be a straight line. It can be a blend of different passions that, when combined, create a unique and meaningful impact.
Her story is a reminder that the best careers often come from following curiosity rather than a rigid plan. For students still figuring out their own paths, Byrd's journey shows that it is possible to turn a love for two different subjects into a profession that truly makes a difference.
