Psychology says people who sleep better with their dog in the bed aren’t imagining it — the evidence on sleep quality is mixed, but the evidence on felt security is consistent, and for most people the second one decides how the night goes

Psychology says people who sleep better with their dog in the bed aren’t imagining it — the evidence on sleep quality is mixed, but the evidence on felt security is consistent, and for most people the second one decides how the night goes

Sleep trackers often show that a dog moving around or taking up space can cause small disruptions. Some studies even find that people with dogs in the bed wake up more often during the night. But when researchers ask those same people how they slept, they usually report a good night's rest. That gap between the numbers and the experience is where psychology steps in.

The key factor is something called felt security. Having a warm, familiar presence nearby lowers anxiety and helps the brain settle into a restful state. Even if the body stirs slightly, the mind stays calm. For people who live alone or feel uneasy at night, the dog acts like a living security blanket. The trade-off is simple: a few extra micro-awakenings are worth the deep sense of protection.

Of course, this does not apply to everyone. Light sleepers or people with very restless dogs might genuinely do better with the pet in another room. But the evidence suggests that for many, the emotional benefit outweighs the physical cost. So if your dog curls up next to you and you wake up feeling fine, trust that feeling. Your brain is telling you something the tracker cannot measure.
