In recent discussions, many individuals have used the term "gaslighting" to describe various interpersonal conflicts, often conflating it with simple disagreements. Experts in psychology are stepping in to clarify the definition of gaslighting and its implications. Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation where one person seeks to make another doubt their reality or perceptions, often leading to feelings of confusion and insecurity.
However, psychologists point out that not every disagreement or differing opinion constitutes gaslighting. When someone expresses a viewpoint that contradicts another’s beliefs, it does not automatically mean they are attempting to manipulate or undermine the other person’s reality. This distinction is crucial, as mislabeling disagreements as gaslighting can dilute the seriousness of actual gaslighting situations, where a person’s mental health and stability are genuinely at risk.
Understanding the true nature of gaslighting is essential for fostering healthy communication and relationships, allowing individuals to engage in constructive dialogue without fear of being accused of manipulation.
