In many Indian homes, the day ends in the kitchen. The last roti is served, the gas is turned off, and then comes a small ritual: using a damp cloth, a few firm strokes across the slab, and a final look to make sure everything shines. While some people do it once to finally clean the slab or the utensils, there are others who do it again and again before they can finally switch off the light.
Most of us have noticed this habit in someone close to us, or in ourselves. They cannot sit down calmly without making the kitchen look spick and span, be it a mother who cannot rest until the counter is spotless, or a roommate who wipes the stove while the food is still being eaten.
Even though we often tend to shrug it off as "just how they are," or joke that they are obsessed with cleanliness, small habits often carry bigger stories. The way we treat one tiny patch of the kitchen can say something about how our minds handle pressure, clutter, unfinished jobs, and the need to feel in control.
Researchers have spent years studying the psychology behind this, and there are surprising reasons why this happens. Cleaning after cooking can act as a closing ritual. It signals to the brain that a task is complete. For people who feel overwhelmed by chaos in other parts of life, a clean slab becomes a small, manageable victory. It offers a sense of order when everything else feels uncertain.
