Psychologist Oleksandra Hurovych spoke about the emotional toll of wartime, describing how depression and withdrawal can take hold of people living under constant stress. In an interview, she explained that prolonged exposure to danger and uncertainty often leads to emotional numbness, loss of motivation, and a sense of detachment from daily life. These symptoms can be easy to overlook, both by those experiencing them and by the people around them.
Hurovych noted that many people feel guilty for experiencing moments of joy or relief during difficult times. She stressed that such feelings are natural and do not diminish a person's concern for others or their country. Suppressing positive emotions, she warned, can deepen exhaustion and make it harder to cope over time.
The psychologist also offered practical guidance for helping others. She recommended staying in contact with loved ones, listening without judgment, and encouraging professional support when signs of depression persist. Small gestures of care, she said, can make a significant difference for someone who feels isolated or overwhelmed.
According to Hurovych, maintaining routines, limiting constant exposure to news, and allowing oneself rest are important steps toward preserving mental health. She emphasized that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness, and that emotional support remains a vital part of resilience during wartime.
