Psychology says people who cancel plans at the last minute may be fighting a battle no one else can see

Psychology says people who cancel plans at the last minute may be fighting a battle no one else can see

When someone makes dinner plans on Monday for Friday night, Friday still feels comfortably far away. By the time the day actually comes around, the plan has to compete with everything that wasn't part of the original decision, exhaustion after a long week, a stressful day at work, unpleasant weather, the comfort of staying on the sofa and even the simple hassle of getting dressed and heading out.

Psychologists suggest this pattern is not always about flakiness or a lack of respect for other people's time. In many cases, it reflects an internal struggle that is invisible to friends and family. Anxiety, burnout, depression and social exhaustion can make even small commitments feel overwhelming as the moment approaches. The person may genuinely want to show up, yet find that their energy or emotional capacity has drained away by the time the event arrives.

There is also the matter of how anticipation changes with mood. A plan made in a good mood can feel impossible to follow through on when that mood shifts. Cancelling then becomes a way to protect oneself from an experience that feels unmanageable, even if the rational mind knows the gathering would likely be pleasant.

For those on the receiving end, the frustration is understandable. But mental health professionals point out that repeated cancellations often deserve curiosity rather than immediate judgment. A gentle check in can reveal more than a sharp response. Understanding the battle behind the behaviour does not excuse every broken plan, but it can open the door to a more honest conversation about what someone is actually going through.
