A new initiative called ROADMAP is helping undergraduate students find their footing in the competitive field of psychology by providing hands-on research experience and direct mentorship. The program acts as a sort of equalizer for aspiring psychologists, particularly those who may not have easy access to graduate school preparation resources.
Participants in ROADMAP work closely with faculty on active research projects, gaining practical skills that are often required for admission to doctoral programs. Beyond the lab work, each student is paired with a one-on-one mentor who guides them through the complexities of applying to graduate school, from crafting a personal statement to navigating the interview process.
The program also offers a structured look at what a career in psychology actually entails. Students attend workshops and seminars that demystify the different subfields, from clinical and counseling psychology to experimental and developmental research. This exposure helps them make informed decisions about their future paths.
Organizers say the goal is to level the playing field. Many talented students from smaller colleges or underrepresented backgrounds lack the same networking and research opportunities as their peers at larger universities. By providing a clear roadmap, the program aims to build a more diverse and well-prepared generation of psychologists. The first cohort of scholars has already completed the program, with several moving on to competitive graduate programs across the country.
