Nike CEO Elliott Hill has decided to limit the supply of Jordan brand sneakers in an effort to reverse declining sales. The move echoes a familiar playbook: when demand weakens, tighten availability to make the product feel exclusive again. But a psychology study from 1975 suggests this approach may backfire.
In that experiment, researchers showed participants two identical cookies. One jar held many cookies, the other just a few. Participants consistently rated the cookie from the nearly empty jar as more desirable. The finding became a cornerstone of scarcity marketing. Limited editions, waiting lists, and sold out signs all trace back to this simple idea.
The problem is that scarcity only works when people already want the product. If demand has faded because customers no longer find the shoes appealing, cutting supply does not create desire. It just makes the product harder to find. That can push buyers toward competitors instead of back to Jordan.
Hill's strategy assumes the brand's core appeal is intact and only needs a nudge. But slumping sales often signal deeper issues, such as stale designs, shifting tastes, or pricing that no longer matches value. Fixing supply without fixing those problems leaves the brand with empty shelves and unchanged demand.
Scarcity can amplify interest. It cannot manufacture it from nothing.
