The young man sitting in my chair has a mind I cannot see, though his head rests squarely in my palms. He is a psychologist, or something close to it. He studied a degree called Health Psychology, a field I had never heard named until he said it aloud.
I have cut hair for years. I know the shape of a skull, the weight of a tired neck, the small flinch when the clippers come too close to an ear. But the mind inside, that is a different territory. He talks about stress and the body, how worry settles into the shoulders and the gut. I listen while I work. My scissors move, and he explains how people carry what they cannot say.
It strikes me that my chair is a kind of office too. Men sit here and tell me things they might not tell a doctor. They confess small failures, worries about money, fears about their children. I only nod and keep cutting. Perhaps that is why he feels at ease. Perhaps he knows a barber hears more than most.
When I finish, he looks younger, lighter. He thanks me and pays. I sweep the floor and wonder how many minds have passed through these hands without my knowing.
